Registration Open for Africa-Middle East Microcredit Summit

Registration is now open for the Africa-Middle East Regional Microcredit Summit to be held April 7-10, 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya. The Summit is co-hosted by the Microcredit Summit Campaign and the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya (AMFI). 

The Campaign is expecting 2,000 delegates from more than 40 countries to gather in Nairobi for what they are calling “the largest and most groundbreaking regional Microcredit Summit Program ever.”  Confirmed speakers include Nobel Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus and Kenyan Deputy Prime Minster and Minister for Finance, the Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Summit will feature field visits to leading microfinance institutions in Kenya on the day before (April 6), the fourth day (April 10) and the day after (April 11) the Summit.  Microfinance organizations hosting the visits including: Jamii Bora, Equity Bank, Faulu, KADET, ECLOF, K-Rep and KWFT.

“The Kenya Summit’s innovation can be found in some of the plenary and workshop sessions,” said Campaign Director Sam Daley-Harris.  Those plenaries include, “Using Microfinance as a Tool for Building Peace “ and “Using Microfinance to Improve the Environment and Agriculture: Ensuring Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa and the Middle East.”   Some of the innovative workshop topics include: “Sustainable Environment: Using Microfinance and People’s Own Initiatives to Propel Investment in Renewable Energy, Water and Sanitation”; “Microfinance and Urban Development: Slum Improvements and New Settlements;” and “Creating Sustainable Livelihoods for Youth to Prevent Destructive Behaviors.”
