Electricity

Electricity in Kenya is supplied at 240 AC, 50 Hz. Kenya uses old British three-pronged plugs with three rectangular blades. You will need a converter to use appliances not running on 240 AC, 50 Hz.

Water purity cannot be guaranteed so bottled water is recommended at all times.

Kenyan Currency

The Kenyan currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). Each Kenyan shilling is divisible into 100 cents. Frequently used banknotes are in 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 denominations. 10 and 20 shillings are also available but rarely used. Coins consist of 50 cents, 1, 5, 10, 20, 40 shillings.

The exchange rate fluctuates according to the day’s trading value, but the usual range is $1 USD = 75-79.90 KES, and €1 Euro = 105.40 KES (average).

Foreign exchange services are available at the conference venue, your hotel, and banks around town.

Credit Cards

Major international credit cards are accepted in Kenya and most ATMs accept any international VISA and MASTERCARD credit cards.

Banking hours

Banks in Nairobi are open from 9.00 am – 3.00 pm Monday to Friday and 9.00 am – 10.00 am on Saturdays. Sunday closed. 24-hour access is possible through ATMs countrywide. Some banks at the international airports open round the clock every day, as do the foreign exchange bureau.

Several banks such as Barclays Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank, Cooperative Bank, National Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of Dubai, Bank of Baroda, amongst others are available around the conference venue within the Central Business District.

Yellow Fever Requirements

We are informed that Port Health officials at the Airport have stepped up efforts to check for compliance by arriving passengers for the Yellow Fever vaccination certificates. These certificates are required not only for passengers coming from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission but also those who may have transited through such countries.

We have further confirmed with officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi) that any incoming passengers who do not have the Certificate and are required to have it (or in some cases those with a fake certificate) will be vaccinated at the Airport if they wish to enter the country. The cost of the vaccination is 1,000 KES.

Travelers from the following Countries MUST have the certificate when coming into Kenya:

Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Colombia Congo, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, French Guyana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guyana, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Senegal, Somali, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Venezuela, Rwanda, Kenya.

The above countries include all countries in West Africa, Central and East Africa and South America.
